July got off to a good start with some fine weather and plenty of fish being caught. Unfortunately the weather soon changed and with the most of July being the worst and wettest ever on record (probably be a hose pipe ban next week lol) the water temperature dropped and the fishing slowed a little. Although the weather was not great plenty of good catches were reported and a lot of better fish have been coming out to 12lb 8oz. The fish are growing well and the average size carp is now 4-5lb which is great to see. I have noticed a lot of fish getting caught around 7-8lb that have never seen a hook before which goes to show that the stress of getting caught definitely slows the carps growth. Stress is the main cause of fish being unwell and not behaving the way they should be so it stands to sense then that we should handle the fish with care and respect and also not play them out or bully them when hooked to help keep the stress levels down so they maintain good health and growth rates.
No new rules this month lol although I still see a lot of anglers striking to hard when they get a bite if the tip goes round or the alarm goes the fish is already hooked you are not setting trebles in a stupid pike (I think that’s what they’re called lol) all you need to do is lift into them with moderate pressure. Striking to hard is the main cause of mouth damage on the fish (especially tench that have soft mouths) and also line breaking and fish being lost. Please make sure your line which should be renewed each season and tackle are all in good order and fit for purpose also if you are not able to keep the fish out of the lilies etc. please do not fish tight to them as there is no point hooking a fish if you cannot land it. Ok rant over I had to give off about something this month lol. (I look forward to the abuse about the stupid green carp eating predator’s lol).
