SUMMER ARRIVES

Finally the sun has made an appearance (rare for N.I LOL) and the fish have responded accordingly with some great catches being reported in May. It’s great to see everything green again and all the wildlife starting to emerge after the long winter.

The carp have now spawned and the fishing should be steady from here on although I have no doubt there will be small batches yet to spawn so if you see any signs of fish spawning in the margins of your peg please avoid this area and let them get on with it.

The Bait-Tech Poloni and New Triple-N boilies are still producing the better stamp of fish. The pellet waggler and 8mm pellets has been producing some good numbers and stamp of fish for lots of anglers. Method feeders with 2mm feed pellets and the new Juice dumbells from Bait-Tech as hookbaits has produced some cracking results as well.

The surface fishing has been difficult with our latest family of ducks 21 ducklings which is some brood for one duck it goes to show that our fishery is extremely healthy and everything thrives at Ivy Lodge. Unfortunately we can’t control nature and we just have to work with them but I am sure you will all agree they are great to see on the lake (or in the pan ha ha).

At Ivy Lodge we pride ourselves in the condition and health of our fish and we want to keep them this way this is why we have rules you may not like or agree with them but if you wish to fish here please abide by them.

There is more to fishing than catching it’s about enjoying yourself and being out in the great outdoors to many people have lost sight of this and are too concerned about numbers and catching more than there mate. This leads to people bullying and damaging fish just to get them in the net so they can brag and show off about how many they caught. This needs to stop fish care is the most important thing take your time when playing fish and let the rod do the work they will come in when they’re ready, always ensure that your clutches are set correctly so the fish can get line and keep the rod high so it takes the pressure if they can’t get line or there is not enough line between the rod and the fish then something has to give and unfortunately it’s usually the fish’s mouth which there is no need for if you play them correctly.

A lot of people lose fish at the net this is because either the rod is to stiff or you have not enough line between the rod and the fish. Monofilament line has lots of stretch in it but if you only have a couple of feet of line between the rod and the fish then this stretch is reduced which puts too much pressure on the hook and then you risk pulling out of it and damaging the fish. Always keep the rod high and bring the fish to the net not the net to the fish. If any of you are unsure of anything or you think you are damaging the fish please ask me and I’ll gladly help you.

Please remember the unhooking mats and slings become very hot in the sun always keep a bucket or container of water beside them to keep them wet and cool as a hot or dry mat will damage the fish. Buckets are available in the net stores. (check April update for more details on fish care).

OK rant over (for now) let’s hope that’s not the summer over and we have lots of good weather ahead of us.

DATES FOR THE DIARY.

We will be holding our annual charity competition and BBQ on the 29th of July and all members and family are welcome. We will be taking bookings and deposits this year as we had to split the match last year due to the high numbers of anglers on the day. If there are enough people wanting to take part we will probably do two 3 hour matches 9am-12pm and 1pm-4pm with an hour for lunch at 12pm. We also hope to have a junior competition on Willow pond in the afternoon as well so any juniors wishing to take part in this let us know. There will be more details on the next update.
