WINTER CARPING
I think it’s fair to say that this is the worst winter we have had in a few years, the weather has been up and down which has made the fishing very patchy. The anglers that have braved the elements have still had some cracking results with fish to low doubles on the main lake and some great catches of silvers still coming out of Willow Pond.
As most of you are aware we netted the fishery again on the 6th Feb a big thanks to Andrew and Ben who did a fantastic job. With snow on the ground and the fact that lake was froze solid the day before (the things I do for you lot lol) the weather was certainly against us. We still managed to net 80% of the lakes stock and the results were fantastic huge growth rates from last year and all the fish were in perfect condition which shows that all the hard work is worth it.
The average size of the fish has greatly increased to 7-8lb and with 50+ doubles to 13lb, 100+ 8-9lb, and 100s of 7-8lb carp the future is certainly looking good. When you consider that I stocked the fishery 6 years ago and none of the fish were over 4 inches you can imagine how proud I am to now have them well into double figures hence the reason for the rule changes (and me going off on one every now and then lol). The fish are young and have a lot of potential for the future so we all need to do our best to look after them.
We now need all anglers to take fish care seriously not only on the bank but when playing the fish. All clutches should be set correctly and your tackle and line should be in top condition and fit for purpose. Please don’t be afraid to ask if you are unsure of anything I will gladly take time to help anyone who needs it.
Please remember this is not a match fishery it’s not about numbers it’s about enjoying your day out and hopefully catching a few along the way. The video below explains a few tips on playing and landing carp please take a few minutes to watch it although not all elements of it suit our lake the basics are still the same. We have some of the nicest and healthiest fish in the country let’s keep it that way.
As we stated in our rules this year the fish are now too big for unhooking over your knee if using a seatbox all fish must now be unhooked in the cradles supplied also no fine wire hooks and no hooks smaller than a size 12.
I know these rules may upset a few anglers but the health of the fish must come first.
We are looking forward to the new season and with plans in place to further improve the fishery the future is looking good.
