SPRING IS HERE AT LAST!!!

Spring is officially here and the weather can only get better (we hope!!!!!). April was not the warmest on record that’s for sure with the frosts continuing throughout the month the fishing was slower than it should be at this time of year although good results have still been had with fish on the bank to over 10lb.

Going into the start of May and it looks like the weather is improving which should hopefully wake everything up and the fish will get their heads down.

The usual keep it simple tactics still seem to be producing the best results with the fishery 2mm pellets as feed and pellet hook baits doing the business.

I have found a few rigs lately that should not be used for any fishing never mind carp this has to stop anyone who is unsure of anything please ask me or risk getting banned.

A lot of people seem to be watching too many tv programmes and reading to many magazines about carp fishing not that there is anything wrong with this but we all have to realise that it’s a different style of fishing over here compared to the rest of the UK yes we can all learn from these but we need to take ideas from them not copy them as 3lb test curve rods, big pit reels and 20mm boilies on a size 4 chod rig are big carp tactics suited to fishing in England, France etc, not for Ivy Lodge.

The heavy rods and big reels put too much pressure on the fish and cause a lot of damage with hook pulls.

2.5lb test curve is the max you would ever need anywhere in Northern Ireland with lighter feeder style rods better suited for here. All anglers are again reminded that fish care and good handling is the most important thing when fishing not the amount of fish you catch.

Here’s hoping for a good long warm summer.
